South Australia Changes Prostitutiuon Laws

The bill will be presented in the upper house in June the 13th. Controversies mainly revolved around the locations of the brothels among other issues for example; the employment of minors. According to the previous law, there were no restrictions on the locations of the brothels. The changes to the prostitution laws in South Australia are greatly pushed by Ms. Key. She tries to gather maximum support from everyone and tries to explain the benefits of the new law. Prostitution has been associated with negative and backward practices like crimes and drug use. What are the new laws?

Of late, brothels, soliciting in public places, receiving rewards from the prostitution of another person and procuring prostitution are illegal in South Australia. Ms Key’s legislation will greatly impact the prostitution laws in South Australia. This is a summary of the new legislation; Brothels within the city will be located fifty meters from churches and learning institutions like schools and kindergartens. In the suburbs, it is proposed that they should be located two hundred meters from such institutions.

This proposal relies on the density of the population and if a flat rate of two hundred meters was used even for cities, it means that adult sex workers from within the city will be forced into the suburbs thus worsening the situation.Employment of minors in the brothels will be illegal and unlike before it will earn an individual legal action.Forcing people into prostitution is also prohibited by the new law. There is a proposal that compensation laws be extended to cover sex workers.Sex work on the streets is an offense punishable by law. It will even be worst if a person offers sex services in front of another person. For those who engage in unprotected sex, they will pay a fine of $2500. This stiff penalty will, therefore force people to have protected sex and there will be little cases of people preventing or discouraging others from using protection during sex.

The new proposals made praise from majority of the people except the police who have argued that, the reforms were inadequate especially the fact that prostitution itself is legal in Australia. They challenged the new proposals saying that it will pose problems to them in the course of duty. Despite all the negative views about the new law in South Australia, majority of the citizens including Ms key are very optimistic that the new legislation will be passed. They believe that the new law will be of great help.
