Prostitutes in Auckland New Zealand are using the street signs for pole dancing routines aimed at attracting new customers. Over the last one year, over 40 poles have been broken, bent or buckled. Local authorities said that the damaged signs cost taxpayers a lot of money to replace.
Officials say that the main culprits are the local prostitutes who use the signs like the stripper poles in strip clubs. Some American pole dancers claim that the New Zealand officials are being unfair to the urban pole dancing sport. A sport whereby ladies take what they have learnt from the gym and apply it to the signs along the streets.
Founder of the United States pole dancing federation Wendy Traskos believes that the problem in Auckland is not as a result of prostitution but as a result of the poor material used to make the signs.
Kelly Blake, a pole dancing instructor said that street pole dancing is helping to get rid of strip bar stigma that is associated with the sport.
“It is fun to do it especially in an intersection and have people look at you in a less trashy way” she said. Crystal Harris shared the same sentiments with Kelly. She told would be pole dancers to be prepared to get some strange looks.
“It can go either way” she added, there are some people who will look at you as strippers without poles and others will appreciate what you are doing.
Auckland locals claim that the damaged signs are just one sign that there is a problem. They said that the prostitutes are leaving behind drugs and used condoms.
One specific resident said that he was forced to move from the area when he saw a couple having sex in front of his daughter. Most residents say that things will get even worse if the local officials do not step in and solve the problem. |
